WILLOW SHOULD HAVE her head examinedâoh, wait, she already had at the ER. Today sheâd made it through her lesson at the Circle Hâafter her talk with Thad, sheâd gone in the first place to demonstrate her determination to do as she pleased. The training had gone well enough. At its end, though, after being unable to keep her eyes off Cody, sheâd gotten in even deeper there. Olivia had asked him to help with the upcoming town summer festival. Heâd agreed and Olivia had suggested they do pony rides for the kids. Somehow, Willow had ended up sharing that responsibility. Not knowing how that had happened, sheâd hurried off, leaving him and Olivia to cool Prancer, using an appointment with Cass and Jean as her excuse to leave.
In fact, they were in Farrier now seated around a small table in the floristâs shop, the air heavy with the scents of various blooms.
Willowâs mind wanderedâwhich was becoming as bad a habit as playing with her engagement diamond. Ever since Cody had kissed her, sheâd been more aware than ever of the attraction sheâd once felt for him. Over several weeks, his summer tan had deepened, and his shoulders looked broader than she remembered, his muscles even more well defined. Hoping her disappointment in herself didnât sound in her voice, she told Cass, âWe seem to be on a roll with this party,â trying to concentrate on the here and now, but sheâd barely heard a word her friend had said before.
Maybe her renewed awareness of Cody wasnât because of that kiss, but because she felt irritated with Thad. After falsely claiming he wouldnât waste his time, heâd stepped in about Diva. It was beneath him to try to interfere with the adoption.
Cass, however, seemed delighted about the coming party. âWeâve had RSVPs now from almost everyone on the guest list, and I imagine the rest will come in by the time we need to let Jack know the final count for the dinner. These flowers are next. Then Iâll need to reserve chairs and create some wonderful party favors.â
Willowâs mom said, âRight now, Iâm thinking white roses, greenery, in crystal vases for our centerpieces...â She looked more closely at Willow. âYou should have stayed home today, honey. I think youâre doing too much after that nasty accident.â
More like after my talk with Thad. And seeing Cody again... Willow couldnât seem to summon any interest in flowers. âIâm okay, Mom. Letâs get this over with.â
âI think we should hire a few people as valets to park cars that night,â Cass added just as the florist stepped into the room.
âAfternoon, girls.â She sat at the small round table with them. âNow, letâs discuss. These choices are of course dependent upon the budget you have in mind, but the selections are all flexible. If you decide, say, on carnations rather than roses or alstroemeria instead of hydrangeas...â
Willow stopped listening even marginally. She didnât want to be here, and she sensed her mother wished sheâd stopped at home to shower and change after being around horses all morning.
